Happy Autism Awareness Month!

It's Autism Awareness Month!

And you know what that means! It's time to pull out everything blue and get those creative juices flowing on ways that you can help spread awareness about autism and advocate! In the past, Solon and I have had some creative ideas on how to support the autistic community. Here are a few ways you can show your support to the autistic people you care most about.

The Color Blue

As many of you know, blue is the color that has been adopted to represent autism. Showing off your blue clothing is one way to go to show off your passion toward autism. Every year, stores display t shirts with some clever or touching saying about autism. Wearing blue during the month of April is an easy way help do your part to spread awareness.

In the past, Solon and I have dyed our hair blue. Dying my hair was my idea, however Solon expressed his interest in putting the color in his own hair to show off at school. I had my doubts about putting the dye in Solon's hair. Back then, he gave me real issues if I needed to touch the top of his head. But, Solon took it like a champ while rubbed that color in. It was something he wanted to do very much.

Take a Picture

For those who don't know me, photography is kind of a hobby of mine. It quite literally saved my life. That is a story for another time. One of the things I enjoy doing is taking a trip somewhere with beautiful scenery and taking pictures. During the month of April, I have taken pictures of many different scenes. I'll pick out my favorite photographs and tint them blue and share them on social media. It's a beautiful way to spread awareness and perhaps inspire someone to share the news as well.

Take a Walk

I know not every area has some kind of event taking place for autism that you can participate in. If it is at all possible, organize your own event, even if it's just a small get together at your own home. If organizing an event is not possible, go out for a hike or a walk. Whatever you do doesn't have to be a big showing or an elaborate affair. Even just taking a quiet walk alone and thinking about your autistic loved ones can be enough to show your appreciation, even if it's just for yourself.

Be Creative!

Don't be afraid to be a little creative in your endeavors. Literally anything can do. If you have an autistic child, write a story featuring them as the star. If they like music, then play their favorite song. Cook a favorite meal or just spend some quality time with your autistic loved ones. A few years ago, I had a puzzle piece butterfly tattoo put on my back. Ever since it was discovered that Solon is autistic, I have gone out of my way to think up the most ridiculous and fun things that I can do in order to spread awareness.

Whatever you decide to do, just have fun with it. Maybe your efforts will get the attention of others, allowing you to answer questions people might have about autism. This month is not just about showing your support when you can. It is also about advocating and educating others about this disorder. One of the best things we can do for our autistic children is to educate others about what autism is. Sometimes, just knowing is all a person needs.

So, once again, happy autism awareness month!

As always, stay positive - Jen
